Past Perfect Continuous'un 3 temel kullanımı

1. Geçmişteki bir olaydan önce süregelen eylem

Geçmişte belirli bir ana kadar belirli bir süre boyunca devam eden bir eylem. Odak eylem üzerinde değil, süreci üzerindedir.

OLUMLU
She had been waiting for two hours when he finally arrived.
O nihayet geldiğinde iki saattir bekliyordu.
OLUMLU
They had been working on the project for months before it was cancelled.
Proje iptal edilmeden önce aylardır üzerinde çalışıyorlardı.

2. Bir sonucun geçmişteki sebebini açıklamak

Geçmişte görülen bir sonucun nedenini, daha önce süregelen bir eylemle açıklarız.

Gözleri kırmızıydı çünkü ağlıyordu (süre boyunca).

3. for / since ile geçmişe kadar süren eylem

for (süre) ve since (başlangıç noktası) ifadeleriyle birlikte çok sık kullanılır.

I had been studying for three hours before I took a break.
Mola vermeden önce üç saattir çalışıyordum.
SINCE
He had been living there since 2010 when he moved away.
Taşındığında 2010'dan beri orada yaşıyordu.

Temel Formül Subject + had been + V-ing Tüm öznelerde yalnızca had been kullanılır. Kısaltma: 'd been → I'd been waiting, She'd been working

Olumlu (Affirmative)

Özne had been V-ing Örnek
I had been waiting I had been waiting for an hour.
You had been working You had been working all day.
He / She / It had been running She had been running for 20 minutes.
We / They had been studying They had been studying since morning.

Olumsuz (Negative)

He had not (hadn't) been sleeping well before the exam.
Sınavdan önce iyi uyuyamamıyordu.

Past Perfect Continuous ile en çok karıştırılan iki ifade

⏱ for — süre

Eylemin ne kadar sürdüğünü belirtir.

  • for two hours
  • for three days
  • for a long time
  • for months / years

📍 since — başlangıç noktası

Eylemin ne zaman başladığını belirtir.

  • since morning
  • since 2015
  • since she left
  • since last week
FOR
She had been waiting for two hours.
İki saattir bekliyordu. → süre: 2 saat
SINCE
She had been waiting since 3 o'clock.
Saat 3'ten beri bekliyordu. → başlangıç: saat 3

⚠️ Stative Verbs — Dikkat!

Bu fiiller Past Perfect Continuous ile kullanılmaz

Durum bildiren (stative) fiiller süreç değil, kalıcı bir durumu anlatır. Bu nedenle hiçbir Continuous zaman ile kullanılamazlar. Bu durumda Past Perfect kullanılır.

✅ I had known the answer for years. (Past Perfect)
Yıllardır cevabı biliyordum.

Stative verb mi değil mi emin değilsen kendinize sor: "Bu eylem bir süreç mi yoksa bir durum mu?" Durum → Past Perfect. Süreç → Past Perfect Continuous.

Pratik kural: Cümlede for veya since varsa ve süreç vurgulanıyorsa → Past Perfect Continuous. Eylem tamamlanmış ve sayılabilir bir sonuç varsa → Past Perfect.
